Brush to Pen Publications

Brush to Pen Publications was formed to house and promote the illustrated/written works of Doug Hammett; full time artist based in Los Angeles.

Doug is primarily a painter, yet has worked in other disciplines such as abstract theater, music, and conceptual fine art. Story is the underlying common thread that hold his body of works together. “If the painting doesn’t have something to say or a story to tell, it gets boring to me,” shares Doug.

Within the history of bookmaking, most illustrated books start with a written document that is handed over to an illustrator to embody its content. This takes a unique skill set to visually interpret the author’s ideas. The works represented by Brush to Pen follow a path counter to what was just described.

In these books the drawing/painting starts the journey. Doug states, “I begin to fall in love with the characters that are forming in the drawing or painting. I don’t know what they want to say or do. I know that if I make enough art pieces with those characters, something is bound to reveal itself and the story begins to tell itself.”
