Back 20+ years ago, when I was making art out of sugar and cake frosting, I created a series of 10 low-relief art pieces made out of fondant. They depicted the ancient Zen Buddhist story called “The 10 Ox-Herding Pictures”. In its simplest interpretation, they illustrate the journey of a Buddhist monk toward their enlightenment. Each piece has its own emphasis, such as finding the ox's tracks, struggling with the ox, taming the ox, and becoming one with the ox. This book documents my fondant art series. I have included the original verses and commentary compiled from 8 different translations of the original Chinese text. Steeped in metaphors, I gain new insight each time I consider its meaning with my own sugary twist.
