The “Los Angeles Street Art #1” Book documents the art found on the streets in the Arts District of LA. These marks made on a public surface can range from a simple tag made with a marker or sticker on the back of a road sign to an elaborate commissioned mural spanning the side of a multi-storied building.
The forms of street art are constantly evolving, yet there are some tried and true styles, such as murals, large and small graffiti tags, paste-ups, stickers, stencil art and sculpture. All these medium are represented in the book.
Downtown LA is a concrete village where even the natural rivers have been turned into endless walled ravines. The walls, trash bins, sidewalks, electrical boxes, underpasses and washes are seen as blank canvases, with unlimited potential. Artists have dedicated their time and energy into making these otherwise dead spaces into avenues of creative expression. Today’s art may possibly be gone tomorrow.
This first book of our series documents works which will probably be painted over, either by the city and businesses with their infamous grey paint or another artist’s works. Hopefully these photos will preserve some of the amazing art we found on our walks through the city and inspire more art for the future.

Murals are one of the longest standing traditions within the world of Street Art, defined as any painting or artwork applied directly to a wall, ceiling or permanent surface either inside or outside. This art form has a vast history dating back some 40,000 years.
Los Angeles had earned the title of “Mural Capital of the World” by this time and was the leading example of how a city could support the arts while giving voice to all its diverse cultures. This title was held for decades until an ordinance to clean up the city passed in 2002.
After 11 years, the moratorium was lifted in 2013. Finally, private owners were given freedom to paint their walls without legal ramifications allowing Los Angeles to reconnect with its history of murals. Currently, we are experiencing a new renaissance of mural paintings allowing Los Angeles to work on reclaiming its title of “Mural Capital of the World”.
Our documentation of these works will allow us to enjoy them beyond their time in the world and find a place in this long, rich history. We give most the credit to the artists, known and unknown, who made these works. It is one thing to see these pieces in a book, it is another to go out into the streets and discover them in person. Hopefully this book will inspire you to take part in this magical world either as the next street artist or art lover.

The book “How Color Created the World”, written and illustrated by Doug Hammett follow the tradition of Creation Stories, similar to those found around the world. The basic need to know where we came from, where are we now, and where are we going, are the basic questions we ask ourselves daily. Traditionally a creation story has an element of playfulness and the unpredictable. Who knows, maybe our joy in relating to light, color and form may be the very impulse that brought us all into existence. If we let color tell its story this may be what it reveals.

This book "Bearded Journey Tarot" combines the new black & white version of the original "Journey of the Bearded Tarot" into a convenient linear format where the explanations sit along side the images for easy reference. The traditional Tarot deck is a collection of 78 illustrated cards. These black and white illustrations reveal a profound archetypal language, speaking to a universal story of humankind’s heroic journey to find meaning in this complex universe.
I bring to this Tarot deck a perspective beyond the traditional heteronormative model; breaking through gender roles and claiming all aspects of our full being. The traditional female archetypes are being embodied by the male figures to give a unique view of what it means to be male in society. Claiming and nurturing these feminine aspects of ones masculinity is essential for healing and liberation.

The “Bearded Journey Tarot” deck is a black and white version of my original illustrated deck called “Journey of the Bearded Tarot”. These powerful graphics (78 cards per deck) reveal new insight into the traditional tarot.
The Major Arcana portrays the phases of one’s life from early innocence and societal rearing, to phases of outer independence and initiation, which eventually returns to an inner spiritual maturation.
The Minor Arcana depicts a more detailed initiation through the four elements: Water, Air, Fire, and Earth. The traditional four suits found in the Tarot deck, Cups, Swords, Wands, and Coins directly relate to these elements as well as seasons and psychological types.
